Introduction and Bio
Welcome to my digital business card! Dedicated to learning continuously and living generatively, I am an author, entrepreneur and professor teaching classes in business, communication, English and information technology to adult learners throughout Southern California and worldwide in asynchronous online classrooms. I am also the owner of Generative Learning Group, a provider of organizational development, management training and instructional design services.
I am drawn to teaching and training because, while it can be as demanding as it is rewarding, no other professional experience has allowed me to positively influence the lives of others while simultaneously giving my own life greater meaning and purpose.
Before endeavoring into education I worked in marketing for more than a decade. I designed ads, brochures, direct mail, public relations campaigns, presentations and websites. In my capacity as a consultant, I have developed management training programs, summer internship initiatives, computer-based training modules and online recruitment procedures.
An award-winning writer and personable speaker, I have published eleven academic papers and presented nine of them at academic conferences. With journalism roots going back to grade school, you can find my byline in numerous publications. I have also served as a paper reviewer for three academic conferences. Further, I maintain a blog, Doctorious, with which I chronicle my adventures in academia as a teacher and student, while featuring stories related to the courses I teach.
Educationally, I hold a BA in English with an emphasis in creative writing from UC Santa Barbara and earned an MBA from Woodbury University. Committed to earning a doctorate, I am identifying programs in which I can investigate the impact of social media on the creation and distribution of information. Specific areas of interest include comics and culture, crowdsourcing, digital divide, entrepreneurship, health communication, knowledge management, propaganda and politics, and virtual communities.
Although raised near San Francisco, I was born in Boston and consider myself a Patriots, Celtics and Red Sox fan. I enjoy comic books and especially admire Superman. I have also had a lifelong fascination with aviation and space travel: I hope to earn a pilot’s license and would gladly take a trip on the Shuttle. When earthbound, however, you can find me living in Santa Clarita, CA.
